About the Database

The SUB Göttingen provenance database is based on AMPLE, a database system developed and operated by SUB Göttingen.

The development of the data schema incorporated key standards and recommendations from the library sector: dbv recommendations on recording provenance, recommendations on collections in provenance cataloging from the dbv Commission on Provenance Research and Provenance Cataloging, and recommendations on recording provenance from the Working Group on Early Printed Books (AAD) within the GBV.

For instance, previous owners are recorded using the Integrated Authority File (GND), provided they are listed therein. Links to the GND are also provided for collections and serial provenance markers. A standardized vocabulary was developed for categorizing the various "types" of provenance features, drawing upon the Thesaurus of Provenance Terms (T-PRO), provenance cataloging in SISIS libraries, and the RBMS Controlled Vocabularies. The vocabulary is publicly accessible via DANTE (Data Hub for Authority Data and Terminologies). It also includes a mapping of the terms to T-PRO and the GND. This process utilized the mapping between GND and T-PRO created by the Working Group on Provenance Cataloging in cooperation with the dbv Commission on Provenance Research and Provenance Cataloging: https://dante.gbv.de/search?p=419
