The historical library of the Albrecht-Thaer-Gesellschaft comprises approximately 2,800 works in around 8,000 volumes, with a focus on general agricultural literature. The origins of the collection trace back to the library of the Royal Hanoverian Agricultural Society, founded in Celle in 1764. In 1881, the library was moved to Hannover when the society relocated there. It returned to Celle in 1926 with the establishment of the Thaer-Seminar (Higher School of Agriculture). After several relocations, some of which were due to wartime disruptions, the library was preserved in the Celle City Archive.
In 2018, the books were transferred to the University Library Göttingen and integrated into the Online Library Catalog. They can be consulted in the reading room for old prints in the historic building. Moreover, the majority of titles include also a link to a digitized version.
This website offers two entry points for researching the Thaer Library: By clicking the link Display top-level classes, you can search the entire Thaer Library collection based on its historical classification system. The top-level categories of this classification are:
Selecting the link Show Narrower Terms within a subject group opens a further breakdown of that group, while Show Broader Terms returns you to the parent subject group. Clicking on the Publications link, on the other hand, leads to a title list in the Thaer OPAC, displaying all titles within the respective subject group.
Alternatively, clicking on Online Catalog takes you directly into the Thaer Library’s OPAC. This allows searching by author, title, place of publication, year of publication, and subject areas.
